James Ensor in Context.
Ensor and the History of European Art from the Collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp
James Ensor (1860-1949) is a representative figure in Belgian modern art. This exhibition showcases the Belgian art history from the 16th through to the 20th century, presenting about 100 works, including 50 Ensor's paintings and drawings, from the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. Ensor adored the paintings by the European Old Masters such as Rubens and Brueghel. Meanwhile, he gained inspiration from the art of his contemporaries. The exhibition tries to explore the historical background of Ensor's unique art by introducing various artists' works which he felt close to.
