Born in 1951 in Morioka, Iwate, Funakoshi studied sculpture in Tokyo and established his signature style of half-length figures carved from camphor wood with inset marble eyes. He has created more than 100 wooden in a little more than 20 years, from his earliest works to works that have not been publicly displayed. This exhibition presents more than a third of his oeuvre, displaying representative works in a retrospective examination of the artist's creative activities. It also includes examples of the artist's drawings, which reveal his thoughts and show the working process that occurs prior to the birth of a sculpture.
