Yunoki Samiro: The Eternal Now

Date:
Oct. 19 - Dec. 22
Location:
Temporary Exhibition Gallery

Detail

Dyeing artist, Yunoki Samiro (1922-2024, b. Tokyo), sadly passed away this year at the age of 101. He was a leading figure in stencil-dyeing (katazome), and his works are full of vitality and captivate us with their free and humorous forms and beautiful colors blended in  pleasant harmony. After the Wold War II, Yunoki found work at the Ohara Museum of Art, where he encountered the Mingei (fork art) movement led by Yanagi Muneyoshi and others, and began his career as a dyeing artist under Serizawa Keisuke. Since the 1990s, while focusing on dyeing works, he has expanded his creative world beyond the boundaries of genres, including prints, collages, picture books, and three-dimensional works.
This exhibition will provide an overview of Yunoki’s diverse activities over the years and introduce works from his last years which will be on view for the first time. The exhibition also features a number of cities in Japan and abroad that are closely associated with Yunoki. We invite you to join us on a journey through the artist's life and works.
