Detail
Kawabata Ryushi (1885–1966, b. Wakayama) started out as a Western-style painter, but switched to Japanese-style painting in 1914, and gained attention through his works at the Inten Exhibition. However, he left Inten and he established an independent Japanese-style painting group, Seiryusha, in 1920s. There, he advocated Kaijo Geijutsu (Art for the Exhibition Place), Japanese-style paintings with extraordinary scale, unique themes and bold expressions, and sparking a new wave in the art world. After a long career, he was awarded the Order of Culture in 1959.
Kawabata, who was also a haiku poet, traveled following Matsuo Basho's Oku no Hosomichi (The Narrow Road to the Deep North), and painted works on the theme of Chusonji Temple in Hiraizumi, Iwate.
The exhibition explores Kawabata's entire painting career spanning over 50 years, showcasing approximately 100 works, including the representative large-scale Japanese-style paintings as well as the early Western-style paintings and sketches.
