Detail
Kataoka Tamako (1905-2008, b. Hokkaido), is known for her Japanese style paintings with unconventional compositions and bold colors.
Having established herself as a painter in the Japanese art world Kataoka became a professor at an art university in Aichi prefecture in her sixties. There she started her new series called "Tsuragamae" (Mask Structure) to pursue her new style of painting together with her young students. Kataoka's lifework series depicts her own interpretation of Japanese historical figures such as Shogun Ashikaga Katauji and Ukiyo-e painter Katsushika Hokusai.
This is the first exhibition to introduce Kataoka's "Tsuragamae" series of 43 works, along with related drawings, and trace the development of her production.
