Detail
Fukutomi Taro (1931-2018), known as the King of Cabaret, was a successful businessman who opened cabarets throughout Japan during the period of high economic growth after World War II. He was also passionate about collecting art works, and bought not only the works of famous artists but even the works by unrated artists if they matched his own sensibilities.
The exhibition will feature more than 80 works that Fukutomi loved, ranging from the dawn of Western-style painting in the Meiji period to the war paintings. It also includes bijin-ga by Kaburaki Kiyokata who inspired him to collect art. Curated by the art historian Yamashita Yuji, who was close to Fukutomi, this is the first exhibition to unveil the entire collection, focusing on Fukutomi's aesthetic sense as a collector.
