Higashiyama Kaii: The Mural Paintings in the Miei-do at Toshodaiji
Nov. 14 - Dec. 27
Detail
Higashiyama Kaii (1908-1999, b. Kanagawa) is known as a national painter who represents post-war Japanese art. With their rich spirituality and lyricism his landscape paintings are loved by many people as a universal expression of Japanese view of nature and their feeling.
We will display for the first time in Iwate all 68 mural paintings in the Miei-do at Toshodaiji Temple, which is a compilation of Higashiyama’s artistic career. He spent as long as 10 years completing the murals dedicated to Ganjin Wajo, who came to Japan from China after many hardships and founded Toshodaiji in the 8th century.
The exhibition aims to wish for and support the further reconstruction of Tohoku region as next year marks the 10 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake.
