Detail
This exhibition celebrates the 150th anniversary of Alphonse Mucha's birth. Mucha (1860-1939), born in Moravia (today's region of Czech Republic), moved to Paris when he was 28 years old and acquired a great reputation for his poster of the play “Gismonda” which starred Sarah Bernhardt, a famous stage actress. Since then Mucha made many posters with designs of figures of women and the plant patterns and he became one of the most prominent artists in the Art Nouveau movement. After he returned to his country he spent many years to paint the series of the Slav Epic, twenty huge paintings under the theme of the Slavs' historical backgrounds. The exhibition gives an extensive overview of Mucha's artistic career, showing brilliant works owned by Sakai City in Osaka, and the collectors in Czech Republic and France. The works such as his early paintings, his most celebrated graphic works and the last paintings in his homeland are on view, including some on display for the first time in Japan.
