Detail
While the exhibition "Yasutake Funakoshi" travels around Japan, we exhibit the works by Yunoki Samiro (1922-, b. Tokyo), a textile artist in Matsumoto Shunsuke and Funakoshi Yasutake Gallery.
Yunoki became involved in the Mingei (Folk Craft) movement led by Yanagi Muneyoshi and decided to become a textile artist. He studied under Serizawa Keisuke after being introduced to him by Yanagi.
Yunoki’s textile designs, characterized by bold compositions and brilliant colors, brought new life to the world of stencil dying. In 1969 he designed the postcards of Miyazawa Kenji's nursery book for Kogensha in Iwate.
The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura and Hayama and Setagaya Art Museum kindly lend us 45 works, including the textiles before 1990's and the illustrations for picture books from their Yunoki collections to enable us to introduce whole career of Yunoki.
