Hans Coper Retrospective - Innovation in 20th Century Ceramics

Date:
Dec.04,2010(Sat) - Feb.13,2011(Sun)

Detail

This exhibition is the first large-scale retrospective of the great British potter, Hans Coper (1920-1981), to be held in Japan. Coper was born in Chemnitz, in the German province of Saxony. Because of his father’s Jewish status he was forced to flee persecution, finding refuge in London in 1939. The turning point in his career came during his search for work after the war when he met Lucie Rie(1902-1995), who was making buttons for the haute couture industry. Thereafter the two became close friends for life, continually influencing each other’s stylistic development. As the only venue in North Japan we showcase Coper's finest 110 pieces to present a full picture of his art ranging from his early works through to his late years, as well as 20 pieces by Rie which reflect the very close working relationship between these two artists.
