Yasutake Funakoshi

Date:
Oct.25,2014(Sat) - Dec.07,2014(Sun)
Location:
Temporary Exhibition Gallery

Detail

This exhibition retrospects the work and life of Yasutake Funakoshi(1912-2002, b. Iwate prefecture), one of the most important figurative sculptor in Japan.
His style, sculpturing innocently beautiful women out of marble and sand stone at the earlier stage, has changed into the serious and unique one featuring Christian motives based on his Catholicism since 1950's. Such works as 26 Martyrs in Nagasaki, Hara-no-Jo and Father Damien have become the most significant sculptures not only in his career but also in postwar art.
In 1987 he suffered a stroke which forced him to switch to his left hand for creative activity. However, his works gained more power and persuasion.
The exhibition tries to unveil what Funakoshi pursued devoting his life as a sculptor by showing his 60 sculptures selected from our museum and other domestic collections along with a number of drawings, including the ones which will be made public for the first time, owned by his family.
