Detail
A small thematic exhibition of a sculptor, Yanagihara Yoshitatsu (1910-2004, b. Hyogo) is being held in Matsumoto Shunsuke and Funakoshi Yasutake Gallery.
Yanagihara, along with Funakoshi, is one of the most important representational sculptors in postwar Japan. Although Yanagihara studied Japanese painting in boyhood he switched to sculpture when he saw photographs of works by Rodin and Bourdelle. After he entered the sculpture section of Tokyo School of Fine Arts, influenced by Takamura Kotaro he tried to stay away from academism. Being deeply moved by the modern French sculpture shown in Tokyo, Yanagihara traveled to France in order to restart sculpture at the age of 43. After 4-year stay in France he returned to Japan and started to produce works of nudes, pigeons and crows. Thus he created unique world of sculpture under his deep insight to living things and his solid artistic concept.
Mie Prefectural Art Museum which owns a great collection of Yanagihara’s works kindly lends us 19 sculptures and 46 drawing to enable us to introduce his career first time in Iwate.
